Bottle rockets

Today we're going to make bottle rockets! We will finish them off and launch them in the lesson on Thursday.  Watch this video from the BBC so you know what we're aiming for. There are also lots of tips on the BBC website to help you. Once you're ready, here are the steps for making one:

1. Use a softdrink bottle, with the cap removed and the opening facing downwards (see picture below).
2. Using card and paper, give your rocket fins and a nose cone so it flies striaght and will travel further.
3. You can decorate your rocket if you like, but don't make it too heavy! This will decerase how far your rocket will fly.
4. You don't need to add anything to hold the rocket on a track for launching, as we will use a tripod from class.

Space

Today we're going to look at Space and the Solar system, so we know more about we've made on the roof! Answer the following questions in your book:

1. Write down a fact about the planet you made from this interactive.
2. Why does an astronaut weight less on the moon?
3. What force pulls the lander towards the planet? Name one other force involved:
4. What are comets made from?
5. Which planet is the second from the sun? How is it similar and different to Earth?
6. Watch this video. What happens to the water? Why is this?
7. What are the gas giants? Explain what saturn is made out of:
8. Try any of these activities!
9. We've played this before, but you can also try this game to fly a rocket to a space station.

Chemistry - Acids and Bases

1. Try this activity. What colour does cabbage juice indicator go with an acid and a base?
2. Watch the video on the projector, and explain WHY the coke dissolves the tooth:
3. What do you need to mix an acid with to make carbon dioxide?
4. Next lesson (in 2 weeks) we're going to make some rockets. Try this game, and say why you think rockets are thin and pointy shaped?

1. What is the symbol for carbon?
2. How many electrons does it have?
3. Try this quiz, and write the symbol for one of the elements you find:

5. Try and get the answers correct and then score a goal!
